The Main Expedition

Patagonia Expedition Tour

Day 1: Arrive in Ushuaia, Argentina – Board Australis

Fly from the Us to Ushuaia, the southernmost city of the World. Upon arrival, you will be met by our representatives and transferred to the Stella Australis ship. Depending on your arrival time, you will have the opportunity to explore Ushuaia, a charming town.

At 4 PM embark Stella Australis. Enjoy a welcome cocktail, briefing and gourmet dinner while you cruise towards Cape Horn.

NOTE: NPE will arrange any extra overnights you may need in Buenos Aires or Ushuaia, and extra activities if desired.

Day 2: Cape Horn & Wulaia Bay

You will be sailing through Murray Channel to reach Cape Horn National Park, where, weather permitting, you shall go ashore. Legendary Cape Horn was discovered in 1616 and is a sheer 425-meter (1,394-foot) high rocky promontory. For years, it was an important navigation route between the Pacific and the Atlantic, and is referred to as the ‘End of the World.’ It was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2005.

In the afternoon, you will go ashore at Wulaia Bay, originally the site of one of the region’s largest Yamana aboriginal settlements. Charles Darwin landed there in 1833 during his voyage on the HMS Beagle. This area is also renowned for the mesmerizing beauty of its vegetation and geography. You will take an enchanted walk through the Magellan Forest of lengas, coigües, canelos, ferns, and other endemic vegetation.

Overnight: O/N Stella Australis. B, L, D and Open Bar.

Day 3: Agostini Sound and Aguila Glacier

Today you will be sailing through Brecknock, Ocasión, Cockburn, and Magdalena Channels to enter the spectacular De Agostini Sound, in the heart of the Darwin Mountain Range. This is where you shall see glaciers sliding down the mountainside straight into the sea. During the journey, bird life will be prolific and diverse. In the afternoon, in well-equipped Zodiac boats, you will travel to the Águila Glacier where you will embark upon an easy walk to its base. It’s the perfect opportunity to experience the beauty of Patagonia’s cold rainforest and to see how the power of nature has molded the spectacular landscape.

Overnight Stella Australis. B, L, D, and Open Bar.

Day 4: Magellan Penguins – Disembark-Torres del Paine Nat. Park – Explora Base

Early in the morning, you will go ashore on Magdalena Island, located in the middle of the Strait of Magellan. The island is inhabited by an immense colony of Magellan penguins that you will be able to see during your walk to the lighthouse. Note: Numbers of penguins decrease during late March.

At 11:30 AM you will say goodbye to Stella Australis and disembark at Punta Arenas, Chile. You will then take first class vehicles, and travel to UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Torres del Paine National Park. This is a 5-hour drive on comfortable vans, that will be broken up by lunch, and panoramic stops.

Torres del Paine is one of the world’s most spectacular national parks. It is an unrivaled landscape of jagged peaks, impossibly blue lakes, iceberg-loaded rivers, and pampas filled with guanacos. It has the highest density of Andean condors and South American pumas in the world. Its unique microclimate creates high temperatures up to 82 F, but part of its beauty is that one can experience the four seasons every day.

Once in the park, you will travel to its heart, where award-winning Explora hotel is located. Explora, our home for the next four nights, is recognized as one of the best expedition hotels in the world, by far the finest in the area, and a winner of so many awards it would be hard to mention them all here. Food is great and services are exceptional. Staying at Explora is a true highlight of the expedition. Weather permitting, you will arrive in time to enjoy, and photograph, one of the greatest sunsets you have ever seen.

Overnight Explora Patagonia. B, L, D and Open Bar

Days 5, 6 & 7: Torres del Paine – Explora Base

Torres del Paine is big, the activities are plenty, and its weather is unpredictable. That is why we suggest four nights and days in the park for a complete and memorable experience.

Also, and for the same reasons, we have selected Explora hotel, the only upscale property located in the middle of the park. With Explora we have secured the shortest drives to each destination, thus maximizing the time to explore and enjoy. Also, Explora is right in front of the Pehoe Lake and the Paine Horns. Sunsets and Sunrises are spectacular.

During your days at Explora Torres del Paine, you will have a varied menú of small-group activities to choose from (No more tan 6 participants), all guided by well trained Explora local guides: From birdwatching, soft walking, horseback riding (The horse operation is top class) hiking, and even demanding hiking (You may even choose to climb to the base of the Paine Towers). It doesn’t matter what your level of fitness is, you will find the right excursions to explore the highlights of the park, at your pace.

You have included, every day, two half day excursions or one full day. All activities are planned daily based on the weather conditions and the guests interests. The hotel also has an indoors pool (With incredible vistas), hot tubs, lecture rooms (Daily lectures are offered) and a great lounge with several fireplaces.

All meals are included, and you will be amazed at the quality of them. They are served paired with an assortment of Chilean wines (included), and you will also have access to the open bar. Your days at Torres del Paine using Explora as your base will remain in your memory as some of the most beautiful and rewarding of your life.

Overnight Explora Patagonia. B, L, D and Open Bar

Day 8:  Drive to Punta Arenas and fly back to the US

After breakfast, enjoy a scenic drive from Torres del Paine back to Punta Arenas, and then fly to Santiago de Chile and connect with your flight back to home.

If you flight back to the US forces a long layover or an overnight at Santiago, we will arrange any day-use or overnights you may need at the conveniently located Santiago Airport Holiday Inn Hotel (4-Star)

If you take the Easter Island or Atacama extensions, the overnight tonight is included at the Santiago Holiday Inn Hotel (4-Star).

Meals included: B, L.

The Easter Island Post Extension

Days 9, 10 & 11: Explore Easter Island – Explora Base

After an included overnight at the Santiago Hilton Hotel with breakfast included, walk to the airport check-in counter and embark on a 5-hour flight to Easter Island, always assisted by our representatives. Once you reach the Island (arrival scheduled for 1:10 pm), transfer to your hotel and enjoy lunch.

Your home at Easter Island will be another Explora property, the Explora Rapa Nui, that will provide you with the same standards as in Torres del Paine: Small-group guided excursions, first-class guides, all fine meals paired with wines, open bar and great common areas to enjoy.

After some time to rest, you will start your detailed exploration of Easter Island by visiting Ahu Tahai and Ahu Akivi, the famous ceremonial site with 7 standing moais.

During the next two days, you will continue exploring the enigmatic Island’s main sites. You will have two half-day or one full-day excursion that includes Rano Raraku (the Moai Quarry), Ahu Tongariki, Vinapu and Puna Pau (ceremonial sites), and Orongo (the Stone Village). You will also have time to visit the beautiful Anakena Beach.

Overnight: Explora Rapa Nui. B, L, D.

Day 12: Explore Easter Island – Fly to Santiago – Fly US

During the morning, you will visit Hanga Roa, the main town of Easter Island. You will have the opportunity to shop, interact with locals, get a free stamp on your passport, visit the local church (Interesting for everyone, mass is celebrated in the local language and the songs are to be heard) Then you will transfer to the airport and fly back to Santiago de Chile and connect with your flight back home.

Meals included: Breakfast and Lunch.

The King Penguins & Gauchos of Tierra del Fuego Pre-Extension

This magnificent Pre-Extension will add, in just 3 days, superb wildlife and cultural encounters. It will also allow you to start and finish your expedition in Punta Arenas Chile, which may reduce the costs of international flights.

Getting there

The international flight tickets are not included in your expedition package. If you take this extension, your flight from the US will fly you to Santiago de Chile where you will need to connect with a flight to Punta Arenas. We recommend departing your home city for Punta Arenas-Chile, 1 or 2 days before the start of your expedition, depending on whether you fly direct to Santiago de Chile, or with layovers.  We can take care of arranging your international flights, add hotel overnights in Santiago de Chile, or one of the several extensions. Please download the complete details or call your Travel Agent or us at 888 832 7280.

Day 1: Arrive in Punta Arenas

Arrive in Punta Arenas today. The flight from Santiago is simply beautiful: You will fly right over the Southern Patagonian Icefield, the 3rd largest freshwater reserve on the planet composed of 220 miles of ice (17,000 cubic miles), forming one of the most dramatic landscapes on earth. Upon arrival, you will be met by our representative and transferred to the Cabo de Hornos hotel, located in Punta Arenas Main Square. The rest of the day is yours to recover from the international flights. You can visit the interesting museums (great for learning the history of the now extinct Patagonia Natives), and enjoy walks along the streets of this, the southernmost former city on the planet.

Overnight: Hotel Cabo de Hornos. No Meals.

Day 2: Magellan Strait – King Penguins – Tierra del Fuego

Early in the morning, take a ferry across the legendary Magellan Strait towards Tierra del Fuego (Land of Fire – 2.5 hours). The ferry ride itself is superb and will allow sightings of multiple bird species, including black-browed albatrosses, four species of petrels (including the southern giant petrel), skuas, dolphin gulls, and South American terns, among many others.

Upon arrival in Tierra del Fuego, you will drive across this iconic island along Inutil Bay with excellent chances to spot guanacos, flamingos, and upland geese among other species. You will enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by superb vistas, before arriving at King Penguin Park, a private reserve where in 2011, a king penguin colony established itself; this is the only one found outside of South Georgia and Antarctica. You will enjoy close sightings of this species, arguably the most beautiful penguin on earth.

You will then continue driving through Tierra del Fuego and will cross the border into Argentina. Once you arrive at your hotel, a simple but comfortable property, you will enjoy dinner.

Overnight: Grande Hotel. (B, L, D)

Day 3: Tierra del Fuego – Gaucho Experience – Ushuaia – Board Australis (Same as day 1 of the main expedition)

After breakfast, you will continue driving through beautiful Tierra del Fuego and soon will arrive at a traditional gaucho farm. Here, you will spend time with the local gauchos, learn their uses and customs, see how they use dogs to manage their lambs, and enjoy a traditional “mate” before a delicious lunch, prepared gaucho style, with great Argentinian wines. A little birding and botanizing is also included.

After your gaucho experience, you will continue towards Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world. You will have some free time in town before boarding your first class ship, the M/V Stella Australis.
