Epic Patagonia & Easter Island Expedition

This is the ultimate Patagonia experience!

After 24 years taking explorers to Patagonia, we bring to you the ideal Southern Patagonia Itinerary: Using the most upscale services in the destination, you have the option to cross Tierra del Fuego to encounter King penguins in the wild and meet Gauchos before navigating to the legendary “end of the world” (Cape Horn) and continue through the Beagle Chanel, Darwin Mountain Range and the Straight of Magellan before disembarking to reach the UNESCO Biosphere reserve of Torres del Paine in Chile (superb wildlife and nature views). If you take the Easter Island Extension you will be traveling from the to the most isolated-inhabited place on earth – Easter Island, to the most remote landmark before Antarctica – Cape Horn. A true epic expedition.

We have combined the very best services in the area, some so upscale that you will not see them included in any other expedition packages. This is truly a unique, groundbreaking itinerary that will not only be outstanding for wildlife enthusiasts, but also for adventurers, soft and hardcore hikers, and photographers alike, all while doing it in upscale expedition style. Bird watching, hiking, horseback riding, superb meals, puma searches, open bar, rooms with the greatest vistas of the planet, the list of highlights is nearly limitless!

Spaces on the Australis cruise and at the Explora hotel are limited and fill up well in advance, so we highly recommend that you contact your Travel Agent or us soon to secure your spaces.

  • All excursions and activities are included.  The itinerary is flexible and adapts to your interests.
  • The best accommodations, transport, and guidance in Patagonia, guaranteed.

The Main Expedition

Day 1: Arrive in Punta Arenas

Arrive in Punta Arenas today. Upon arrival, you will be met by our representative and transferred to the Cabo de Hornos Hotel, located in Punta Arenas Main Square. The rest of the day is yours to recover from international flights.

Overnight: Hotel Cabo de Hornos. No Meals.

Day 2: Free morning in Punta Arenas – Board Australis

After breakfast, you will have some free time to explore Punta Arenas before boarding your first-class ship, the M/V Stella Australis. Board the vessel at 6 PM. After a welcoming toast and introduction of captain and crew, the ship departs for one of the remotest corners of planet Earth. During the night you cross the Strait of Magellan and enter the labyrinth of channels that define the southern extreme of Patagonian.

Overnight: M/V Stella Australis. B, L, D, and Open Bar.

Day 3: Ainsworth Bay – Tucker Islets

You go ashore at Ainsworth Bay, which harbors copious bird life and a colony of southern elephant seals which can sometimes be spotted from the Zodiacs. Leaving our Ainsworth Bay tour behind, you sail west along with the sound to the Tucker Islets. After lunch, you board the Zodiacs again for a close-up view of the Magellan penguins that inhabit the tiny islands. More than 4,000 penguins use Tucker as a place to nest, give birth, and nurture their chicks.

Overnight Stella Australis. B, L, D and Open Bar

Day 4: Pia Glacier – Glacier Alley

By morning you are entering Pia Fjord and boarding the Zodiacs for a Pia Glacier tour. After disembarking you take a short hike to gain a panoramic view of the spectacular glacier, which extends from the mountaintops down to the sea or a longer much more difficult walk up a lateral moraine of the old Pia Glacier. Back on board the ship, you continue east along the Beagle Channel through an area called Glacier Alley.

Overnight Stella Australis. B, L, D, and Open Bar.

Day 5: To UNESCO Cape Horn, the legendary “end of the world”, and Wulaia Bay

During the morning you cruise across Nassau Bay into the remote archipelago that includes Cape Horn National Park. Weather and sea conditions permitting, you shall go ashore on the windswept island that harbors legendary Cape Horn (Cabo de Hornos).

In the afternoon you navigate the narrow Murray Channel between Navarino and Hoste islands and drop anchor at historic Wulaia Bay, one of the few places in the archipelago where the human history is just as compelling as the natural environment. Before leaving Wulaia Bay, drop something into the wooden mail barrel inside the museum – letters or postcards meant to be hand-delivered by future travelers – an ancient mariner tradition revived by Australis.

Overnight: O/N Stella Australis. B, L, D, and Open Bar.

Day 6: Disembark – Tour The Estancia-Rio Grande City

Early in the morning, you will say goodbye to Stella Australis and disembark at Ushuaia, Argentina. Meet your Argentinian Guide and drive to Estancia Las Hijas. Enjoy a delicious lunch and the tour in the Estancia. If you desire you can birdwatch. After this, you will drive to Rio Grande City and check-in at the Grande Hotel. (3 Star. Please do not expect luxury. It is just Ok. Services are slow. This is a remote town. It is fine for one night).

Overnight: Grande Hotel. B, L.

Day 7: King Penguin Park – Tierra del Fuego

After breakfast, you will drive to the Chilean Border, then you will arrive at the King Penguin Park, a private reserve wherein 2011, a king penguin colony established itself; this is the only one found outside of South Georgia and Antarctica. You will enjoy close sightings of this species, arguably the most beautiful penguin on earth. You will enjoy lunch at Porvenir. Check-in in your hotel.

Overnight Hotel Cabo de Hornos. B, L.

Day 8: Torres del Paine National Park – Explora

You will be picked up and travel to UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Torres del Paine National Park. Once in the park, you will travel to its heart, where the award-winning Explora hotel is located. Explora, our home for the next four nights, is recognized as one of the best expedition hotels in the world, by far the finest in the area, and a winner of so many awards it would be hard to mention them all here. Food is great and services are exceptional. Staying at Explora is a true highlight of the expedition. You will arrive in time to enjoy, and photograph, one of the greatest sunsets you have ever seen.

Overnight Explora Patagonia. B, L, D and Open Bar

Day 9, 10 & 11: Torres del Paine – Explora Base

Torres del Paine is big, the activities are plenty, and its weather is unpredictable. Important Note:

Using decades of experience and with the help of our local partners, we have crafted this itinerary in detail and have created a program that maximizes the opportunities for exploring sites, for deep cultural interaction, and to facilitates wildlife encounters while using the best accommodations available. However, unpredictable circumstances such as weather, flight delays or cancellations, labor strikes, road conditions, traffic, hotel overbookings, and other factors may force adjusting the program on-site. These events or realities are out of our control and an inherent risk when traveling, especially on expeditions to this kind of remote destinations. Your Expedition Leader might also decide to alter the program in case opportunities to improve the cultural or wildlife experiences are found. Please note that the expedition leader and hotels could change without notice due to force majeure reasons.
