Set like a jewel in the western Indian Ocean, the Island of Madagascar holds the World record in endemic species. New Paths Expeditions is proud to bring to you the opportunity to explore it following the most complete itinerary offered today – you will visit the center, south, west, east and north of the island- guaranteeing the greatest possible sightings of the most iconic, and some of the most elusive, wildlife species of Madagascar.

Duration: 13 days in the country (Plus a 5-day Extension)

Is this the right expedition for you? The expedition involves multiple wildlife search hikes that last up to 2 hours, but cover short lengths of terrain. The trails are mostly flat and easy, though, at Andasibe, some inclined terrain could be involved. Trails could be muddy.

Rides on bumpy and dusty roads are part of the expedition. The longest one being 4 hours. We use top class tourist buses (With air conditioning) and 4×4’s (With air conditioning). Bottled water is provided throughout the expedition.

There is a combination of warm weather with occasional cold fronts. At Andasibe high humidity and cool nights are expected. Short rains are a possibility as well as unexpected cold fronts.

Accommodations were selected based on their proximity to top wildlife habitats. Some could be rated as basic. Some have air conditioning and all are clean and comfortable. Do note that Camp Amourex (1 night) is a basic camp. Hotel Colbert is the best hotel in Antananarivo and we have secured superior rooms for the expedition participants. The Hotel Colbert is a 4-star property.


Itinerary in Brief:


Day 1: Arrive Antananarivo.map-mad

Arrive today in Antananarivo from the US. Superior rooms at Hotel Colbert (a 4-star considered the best in town) have been booked for all the expedition participants. (Meals Aloft)

Day 2: Explore Antananarivo

Drive through the city most iconic areas on your way to Lemur Park. A well managed Lemur orphanage project that we support, and a great introduction to the country’s species. In the afternoon enjoy some endemics birding. (B, L, D)

Day 3 & 4: Berenty Private Reserve

A morning flight and then a 4-hour drive will take us to the Berenty Private Reserve, a paradise for Ringed-tail Lemurs and Verreaux’s Sifakas (Dancing Lemurs). Visit both ecosystems during night and day encountering multiple endemic species of lemurs, reptiles, insects and flora. (B, L, D)

Day 5 & 6: Fort Dauphin and Fly to Antananarivo

Drive 4 hours to the Fort Dauphin, in the Southern Malagasy coast. Visit the local market and rest. The next day, visit the Nahampoena Private Reserve to look for new species of Lemurs, including the Bamboo Lemur and then fly to Antananarivo and lodge at a comfortable hotel located close to the airport. Day 7: To Kirindy

Fly to Morondava and board 4×4’s to drive one and a half hours to Camp Amourex. The drive takes you through Baobab ‘avenue’. Camp Amourex is a very basic tent camp, where we will stay 1 night (It is the greatest lodging facility in the area). Enjoy a very productive night walk in the reserve looking for the Pygmy mouse lemur, the smallest primate of the world. (B, L, D)

Day 8: Kirindy Nature Reserve and back to Morondava via Baobab Avenue

Spend a full day exploring this fascinating and unique ecosystem that provides superb lemur encounters, several species of chameleons and first class birding. The Kirindy forest is the most threatened habitat, home to the biggest predator of Madagascar, the Foosa. In the afternoon drive back to Morondava going through Baobab avenue at sunset. Day 9: A day in Morondava

Enjoy a morning pirogue ride through the nearby mangroves that will finish at a local fishing village. You will stay at very comfortable seaside hotel and will have time to enjoy the beach and explore the town. (B, L, D)

Day 10 & 11: Andasibe National Park

Fly to Antananarivo and then drive three hours to Andasibe. Enjoy an evening wildlife excursion. On day 11, spend the day exploring the Andasibe National Park in search of the Indri Indri, the largest lemur of them all. Many other species abound. Superb lemur, reptiles and flora photography is guaranteed. (B, L, D)

Day 12: To Antananarivo via Chameleons’ Park

After one more excursion at Andasibe, drive back to Antananarivo. On the way, stop at a private park that holds a superb collection of reptiles and amphibians. You will dine and overnight at Hotel Colbert. (B, L, D)

Day 13: Fly Home

Today, after breakfast, transfer to the airport and fly back to the U.S, or continue with the Nosy Be Extension. (B)

Day 14: Fly to Nosy Be

Today, fly from Antananarivo to Nosy Be Island, located on the northwest coast of Madagascar. Nosy Be is considered a natural paradise of beautiful beaches, supreme natural diversity -both on ground and underwater, and welcoming locals. (B,L,D)

Day 15: Lokobe Natural Reserve

Lokobe is considered one of the most beautiful and well managed Natural Parks in Madagascar. Spend a full day exploring it in search of unique wildlife, including the endemic Black Lemur and the Panther Chameleon. (B, L, D)

Day 16: Snorkel at Tanikely Marine Reserve

In the morning, take a boat ride to Tanikely Marine Reserve, consider the greatest one in Madagascar, and enjoy top class snorkeling in the Indian Ocean.

Enjoy the afternoon relaxing while enjoying Malagasy hospitality at the hotel’s beach. (B, L, D)

Day 17: Fly to Antananarivo and back home

After breakfast fly to Antananarivo and check in at the Colbert Hotel. You have the choice to fly back home tonight, or stay the night and fly on day 18. The overnight, and breakfast are included for your convenience. (B, L)

Day 18: Fly to Antananarivo and back home

After breakfast, transfer to the airport and fly back home.

However, unpredictable circumstances such as weather, flight delays or cancellations, labor strikes, road conditions, traffic, hotel overbookings, and other factors may force adjusting the program on site. These events or realities are out of our control and an inherent risk when traveling, especially on expeditions to this kind of remote destinations. Your Expedition Leader might also decide to alter the program in case opportunities to improve the cultural or wildlife experiences are found. Accommodations

Hotel Colbert

This is considered the best hotel in Tana and offers visitors clean rooms, good food and modern amenities. New Paths Expeditions have secured Superior Rooms to guarantee the best possible comfort for you. This hotel also features a business center, gym, spa, and casino. The two restaurants offer some of the best food in the city, and the outdoors terrace provide great views of the city. Free WIFI is provided in the hotel lobby and plug in internet is available in all rooms.


Berenty Lodge

Built in harmony with the environment, but without renouncing comfort, Berenty Lodge rooms feature air conditioning, ceiling fans, and hot running water. The Berenty not only provides you with good lodging but gives you the chance to observe Lemurs right outside your door and very close access to two distinct types of forest.


Croix du Sud Hotel

A modern and comfortable small hotel, the Croix du Sud supplies you with clean rooms that include a TV, air conditioning, ceiling fans and hot running water. All rooms look to a small central garden. WiFi is available in the lobby.


Relais De Plateaux

This small hotel has been selected due to its close to the airport location. Rooms are comfortable, with air conditioning, hot running water, minibar, kettle for tea or coffee and a hair dryer. A full-service restaurant and dining room are in the hotel, as well as a bar. Rooms also come with a minibar, kettle for tea or coffee and hair dryer.


Camp Amourex

Camp Amoureaux is a very basic camp and provides tents on platforms which are equipped with mattresses. All tents feature a simple, but clean bathroom. Hot water is not available, and electricity is limited to morning and evening hours. Having a flashlight is a must. Food is basic but safe. Service can be slow. This property is the best accommodation available close to Kirindi Reserve.


Palissandre Cote Ouest

You will certainly be delighted with your stay at the Palissandre Cote Ouest, considered one of the best hotels in Madagascar. Located on the beach, with a nice pool, bar and with free WIFI at the lobby, this hotel provides lodgings that are based on the traditional Malagasy style while providing every modern convenience. Bathrooms are quite large and showers are very good.


Vakona Lodge

Set in the middle of a reserve, Vakona lodging consists of bungalows that provide you with clean comfort. Screens will allow you to keep the windows open for good air circulation. The restaurant provides good food, and you can dine either inside or on the terrace. This is the ideal location to explore the Andasibe National Park.


Palm Beach Nosy Be Hotel

Balconies come with all standard rooms in this top level hotel so that you can sit and enjoy the sea breezes. All rooms are modern and equipped with air conditioning, television, and Wi-Fi among other amenities. The Palm Beach Hotel is the perfect spot to enjoy the beach in between excursions.

Deposits and final payments:

  • A deposit of US$ 1500.00 is required at the time of booking (Part of this deposit will be used to make the domestic flight 30% deposit, required by Air Madagascar. Please note that due to limited flight spaces, booking well in advance is highly recommended)
  • The remaining expedition cost will be charged 90 days before the expedition begins.
